Four kids from underwater move topside and everything about connection, to each other, to this strange new world, becomes unbearably real. The romance isn't window dressing. Four 14-year-olds from Shioshishio, a village on the ocean floor, must transfer to Mihama Middle School on the surface when their own school shuts down. Hikari Sakishima, Manaka Mukaido, Chisaki Hiradaira and Kaname Isaki soon face the deep hostility and prejudice that divide the sea people from those who live on land. Long ago, the surface dwellers abandoned the ocean and lost the Ena, the gift of the sea god that let them breathe underwater, and over the generations the two peoples drifted far apart. On land the group meets Tsumugu Kihara, a classmate and fisherman devoted to the sea. As childhood slips away, the friends struggle with new feelings and upheavals in their own lives, while a coming storm threatens everyone who lives above the waves. The result is a fantasy drama that blends school life, romance and the rift between two worlds.
