Hana Tabata is a first-year high school student who sees herself as plain and unattractive, a background figure rather than the heroine of the shoujo manga she loves. Each day she arrives early to swap out the flowers in her classroom, and one morning she tucks a bloom into her hair and plays at being a manga heroine. Yosuke Ueno, the best-looking boy in her class, walks in and catches her. He has long wondered who tends the classroom flowers, and learning it is Hana draws the two closer, bit by bit. Progress stays slow: Hana turns down chance after chance to move forward, while Yosuke is naive about love. The result is a gentle romantic comedy built on the distance between two people who keep almost closing it.
