Saya's double life never quite commits to either side, and that's the point, the show spends half its runtime watching her eat cake with friends while something deeply wrong gestates underneath. The monster-of-the-week structure isn't filler; it's a countdown where every episode asks the same question differently until the answer stops being polite. By episode 12, it stops asking at all.

Saya maintains the facade of an ordinary schoolgirl, attending classes and chatting with friends at a local cafe, but her real life emerges after dark. Living in a quiet shrine village with her father, she carries a brutal secret: when creatures of impossible horror crawl out of the shadows, Saya becomes the only thing standing between her community and annihilation. Armed with a ceremonial sword her father gave her for sacred duties, she hunts these monsters, known as the Elder Bairns, through the night. The line between her two lives grows increasingly fragile when she hears the monsters mention a broken covenant she has never heard of. Soon a strange talking dog asks to whom she made her promise to guard the village, and wonders what would happen if she broke it. Haunted by visions she cannot explain, Saya searches for the truth in a village where nothing is quite what it appears. What is she protecting? Who is she really protecting it for? The answers demand blood.
