Maruko doesn't try to be anything bigger than it is, just a kid noticing the small, stupid, perfect details of everyday life. The comedy lives in those moments: a bad haircut, a failed test, the way your grandma embarrasses you in front of your crush. You watch this show the way you actually live, one unremarkable day at a time, finding something to laugh about in each one.

Momoko Sakura is a grade schooler whose youth and tiny stature earned her the nickname Chibi Maruko-chan. She shares a home in a small town with her mother and father, her grandparents and her big sister. She loves manga and adores the idol Momoe Yamaguchi. Her school days are filled with lessons and play alongside plenty of classmates: Tama-chan is her best friend, Maruo-kun and Migiwa-san serve on the student committee, and Hanawa-kun, Hamaji and Sekiguchi-kun make up a trio from class B. The result is a gentle slice-of-life comedy that draws its humor from the ordinary moments of childhood.
