Bellin Ajelli inherits something most people only dream of: the accumulated memories of every Songstress who came before her. On the colony world of Carmine, these young women are humanity's spiritual anchors, carrying generations of knowledge to guide a population crushed under an oppressive interplanetary regime. At sixteen, Bellin begins her sacred journey across the planet, hoping to use her newfound gift to bring change. Then Prince Truhallon arrives. A commander from the militaristic Donau Empire, he's been assigned to protect Bellin from rumored terrorist threats. He represents everything she despises: state authority, rigid hierarchy, violent order. She represents everything he was trained to suppress: spirituality, individual freedom, peaceful resistance. Yet they're bound together on an impossible pilgrimage toward the capital, forced to confront whether understanding the past means accepting those who shape the future.
