The village seals itself and everything you thought you understood about these characters gets burned away. Rena with a cleaver, Keiichi swinging a bat, the kind of violence that doesn't feel stylized or earned, it just happens, and that's the point. This isn't the Higurashi you rewatched for comfort; it's the one that reminds you why the series terrified people in the first place. In 1983, Hinamizawa is under quarantine. A mysterious and deadly virus has turned up in the small village, and residents such as Keiichi Maebara and his friends Mion Sonozaki and Rena Ryuuguu are left confused and afraid. As villagers hunt for a way to stop the illness from spreading, some of them hatch drastic plans, and Keiichi and his friends start searching for a way out of the village. As tensions climb, not everyone in the group may escape unharmed while they fight to survive against enemies both visible and hidden. The single-episode OVA returns to the same village as the earlier stories and blends action, mystery and psychological thriller.
