Long ago in the village of Ikuta, a young woman named Unai-Otome was courted by two suitors who both loved her dearly. Unable to decide between them, she was torn apart by the choice and in her anguish took her own life. Though her intentions were pure, death brought her none of the rest she longed for. Many decades later, a pilgrim passing her grave meets a beautiful young woman, and the old tale stirs to life once more. Drawn from the classic Noh play Motomezuka, this supernatural film by Kawamoto approaches the absurdity of the human condition as a drama in the Japanese tradition.
