This one doesn't ask you to care about split times, it asks you to sit in a hot gym pool in 2007 and laugh at people who have no business being in a swim club. Kaname joined Umishou to finally learn to swim and got handed a roster of lunatics instead of a coach, which is the whole joke and the show knows it. Then Amuro shows up from Okinawa, moves underwater like she was born there, and treats swimsuits as optional, and the club's dynamic never recovers. The animation is visibly cheap, the actual plot doesn't bother showing up until the back half, and neither of those things matters because the gag rhythm is genuinely tight episode to episode. The romance stays light, nobody cries about their dead rival, and the whole thing smells like chlorine and sunscreen. Watch it in August with the windows open.

What surprises Kaname most is that she reminds him of a mermaid-like creature he glimpsed only once as a small child. Between the antics of an eccentric club and the puzzle of their newest member, Kaname's simple goal of learning to swim is anything but simple.
