A documentary that roasts you while you're watching it, stuffed with real otaku admitting on camera what you've only thought in private. The animated half is deliberately messy because the point isn't the story, it's the mirror. By the end you're laughing at Ken becoming the Otaking and recognizing yourself in every frame, which means you're laughing at yourself.

Ken Kubo's perfectly ordinary existence changes when he is pulled into a circle of otaku. Little by little he grows more like his new friends, until he chooses to leave his old life behind and pursue a singular goal: become the Otaking, the king of all otaku. Loosely drawn from the real founding of Gainax, the two-episode OVA mixes its animated comedy and drama with live-action interviews of real otaku. The interviewees go beyond anime and manga fans to include sci-fi devotees, military enthusiasts and other kinds of Japanese geeks, painting a wide picture of hardcore fan life.
