You're watching the moment someone decided the dead battleship Yamato could save humanity, before the show itself existed. This pilot is rougher than what came after, but that rawness is the point: it proves the core idea worked on executives who'd never seen anything like it. Sixteen years locked in a vault, then released like a secret meant only for the obsessed who'd already loved the series into legend.

Uchuu Senkan Yamato Pilot Film is a one-episode sci-fi drama special made in August 1974 as a pilot for the Space Battle Ship Yamato series. It was produced to be shown to executives at Yomiuri Television and stayed out of public view for 16 years, until it was included in the Yamato laserdisc box set. Later DVD and Blu-ray editions also carry the pilot, but some sounds and audio are missing from them because of a copyright problem that arose after the laserdisc release.
