Will spends half the show asking "who am I" while his three undead parents already know the answer, and watching him catch up to what they see in him breaks something open in your chest. The animation is cheap and it shows, but the script refuses to let that matter because every scene is about a kid learning what love looks like when it comes from people who have nothing left to lose. By the time you understand what Blood, Mary, and Gus are actually protecting him from, you stop thinking about the budget entirely.

Will grows up alone in a graveyard city, surrounded by three undead guardians who love him fiercely: Blood, a skeletal warrior; Mary, a dignified mummy; and Gus, a cantankerous ghost. They're his entire world, teaching him everything from swordsmanship to faith. But as Will matures, questions consume him. Who is he really? Why does he exist in this place of death? What does he actually know about the world beyond? His search for answers pulls him into the mysteries of this remote land and the hidden pasts of the three who raised him. He comes to learn of kind, merciful gods and of cruel, maddened ones. In this world, every adult swears an oath to a god of their choosing, and the strength of that vow shapes the blessing they receive. With the day of his departure drawing near, Will prepares to face the truth about his guardians and set out on the road toward becoming a Paladin.
