Dangobei, a kagura performer from the village of Tanokyu, entertains the crowd at another village's festival with his comic masks. Once the celebration ends and he has been paid, he heads home after dark, but he takes the wrong road and ends up in the Kuragari-toge Pass while his mother worries back in Tanokyu. There a giant snake confronts him, and Dangobei must rely on his masks and quick thinking to get through the encounter. The film is a fantasy adventure with the feel of a folk tale.
