An old man in a cell hears a flower speak, and suddenly his entire wasted life becomes something he has to answer for. The film doesn't flinch from what he's done or who he's become, it just lets him sit with it, with only a balsam flower willing to listen. By the end, you're not sure if the flower was ever real, and it doesn't matter; what matters is that he finally had to be honest about what pathetic means.

In autumn 2023, Akutsu, an elderly man serving a life sentence, faces a lonely end in his solitary prison cell. Then a touch-me-not flower speaks to him in a human voice and tells him what a wretched life he has led. Their exchange pushes Akutsu to look back on his past, returning to the summer of 1986, when he shared a run-down apartment with Nana, a woman six years younger than him, and her son Kensuke, beside a garden overgrown with the same flowers. Told through a blossom in a prison cell, this drama feature recounts a dying yakuza's one-night triumphant comeback and the story of his family.
