A girl and an orca become inseparable on a research ship hunting for a creature that may not exist anymore. Nanami Simpson lost her mother when she was young, and she now lives with her father, Scott, aboard a research ship called the Peperonchino. Scott is a marine biologist searching for the legendary Glowing Whale, but finding the bones of one saddens him and turns his work toward protecting and caring for these creatures. Nanami befriends an orca she calls Tico and swims with it every day. In time she gains the ability to breathe beneath the water, which astonishes her father. Ocean adventure mixes with everyday life at sea.
