A kid finds a dinosaur and keeps it, and the movie understands that this is enough. There's no villain monologuing about exploitation or scientists chasing it with nets, just a boy learning what it means to love something that doesn't belong to your world. Coo dies at the end, and the movie doesn't apologize for it.
Obata Yousuke lives with his father Tetsuo, an oceanographic biologist, on the island of Pagopago in the Fiji archipelago. After a storm hits the island, Yousuke takes his Jet Ski out to the lagoon and comes across a strange baby dinosaur. He brings it to his father's laboratory and names it Coo. As Coo grows, it appears to be a young plesiosaur, a marine reptile from some 65 million years ago. The creature soon draws the notice of the French secret service, whose job is to guard France's nuclear interests in that otherwise quiet corner of the world. The film is an adventure drama with elements of mystery and slice of life.
