A single episode of pure movement through a city at night, no story required. The soundtrack doesn't underscore the animation, it IS the animation, every footstep and engine hum synced so tight the parkour becomes music made visible. Sasebo transforms into a spirit you're chasing rather than a place you're watching, and by the end you understand why they named it after the word for ancestors.

Sasebo, a city in Nagasaki Prefecture, becomes a cyberpunk backdrop for a short burst of mystical action. A girl with no name turns up at a school and then runs through a cyberpunk rendition of Sasebo, gathering lanterns while an ominous figure gives chase. The short ONA from Toei Animation and Nagasaki International University builds its mystical action around Obon, the custom of welcoming and sending off ancestral spirits, and takes its title from an ancient Avestan word for spirit said to lie behind that name. Real Sasebo scenery is reshaped into a futuristic world where the unusual and the everyday meet, with local specialty products worked into the visuals in a glowing, stylized form. The team made it with remote location scouting during the pandemic.
