Masaki's not chasing championships or pushing himself to breaking point. He's just a kid who stumbled into something that made him feel alive, and now he's learning that the friendships built in those moments don't always survive outside the water. The show knows the difference between a sport that changes your life and a sport you do before real life pulls you in different directions. It's quiet about that loss, which makes it hurt more.

Fourteen-year-old Masaki Hinaoka lives in Ooarai, in Ibaraki prefecture, and jogs along the beach each morning with his corgi. One day he watches a blond boy riding the waves with quiet grace, and soon that boy turns up in his class as transfer student Shou Akitsuki, a surfer since childhood. Masaki has never cared to surf, even though his laid-back, half-Hawaiian best friend Nalu Tanaka loves it, but Shou's style inspires him to try, despite the fact that he cannot swim. He turns out to have a knack for balance, picks things up fast, and eventually enters a local contest with Shou and Tanaka supporting him. Yet Shou's gentle smile hides something darker. The ocean becomes a backdrop for growing up: Masaki makes new friends through the sport and also drifts apart from some of them on his way toward adulthood.
