A game of Go becomes the surface of a much larger war. Emperor Xiaoming and Jiang Liuer sit across the board from King You and the Chess Demon King, and every move they make hides a clash of soldiers, swords, and spears beneath the calm ritual of stones on a grid. One side wants a strong nation and a peaceful life for its people. The other pushes militarism and crushing taxes, ready to plunge the realm into misery for the sake of power. What looks like a quiet contest of strategy plays out with the force of colliding planets, turning a board game into the battlefield where the fate of the people gets decided.
