Nie Li comes back to a weaker body with all his knowledge and none of his power, which means every victory is him outthinking the present instead of just executing what he already knows. The spiritual cultivation system pulls from actual Taoist philosophy instead of generic magic systems, so the mechanics feel like you're learning a real language rather than memorizing arbitrary rules. He's rebuilding everything he lost one student at a time, and the show knows that teaching others to survive what killed him before is the only way to actually prevent it this time.
