Misaka stops being the girl who wins and becomes the girl who has to decide what winning costs. The animation budget finally matches the ambition the series always had, and every action sequence earns its place in a larger conversation about whether you can be yourself when the system around you is designed to use you. By the end, you realize the real opponent was never the other school at the festival.

Mikoto Misaka returns as Tokiwadai Middle School, the prestigious all-girls' school she attends, takes part in the Daihasei Festival, a seven-day athletic event where esper schools compete against one another. While her classmates give everything they have to win, darker forces stir behind the celebrations. Academy City opens part of itself to the public for the festival, and various factions start scheming to slip inside. Misaka appears to have caught their attention. What begins as a festive school event soon turns more dangerous. As the competition goes on, figures hiding in the shadows begin to surface, and Misaka and her friends are drawn further into the dark side of Academy City, where terrorist attacks and ruthless underground projects are all possible. This third season blends sci-fi intrigue with action.
