Tokidoki wakes up in the Edo period thinking he's still in a simulation, except the nue that took his eye is very real, and neither of you knows why yet. The mythology unfolds like a locked box being picked at from the inside, demons, kami, humans all stacked in layers he has to understand to survive, not just to pass a test. It gets weird in the middle and never quite finishes what it started, but those opening episodes hook you hard enough that you'll forgive it.
After flunking Japanese history, high school student Tokidoki Rikugou is made to earn back his grade at a high-tech museum whose virtual reality exhibit recreates Edo during the Bakumatsu era. The simple assignment goes wrong when two supernatural beings, the nue and the yakou, attack him and he loses the sight in his left eye. A girl named Kuchiha rescues him from the nue, and he then notices that the simulation goggles are gone: he is trapped inside the virtual Edo with no way back. There he meets Kon Shinonome, another swordsman from his own time who got stuck before him. Settling into his new life, Tokidoki helps defend the village against demons while trying to unravel the secrets of the simulation and the company behind it. The series is a supernatural action fantasy adapted from a josei manga.
