A village in the mountains of Kōchi during World War II has come to see Americans and Britons as brutes, a view rooted in the deaths and injuries suffered by the villagers' relatives. Eiko, an elementary schoolgirl, transfers there from Yokohama. She has blue eyes from her American father, and her classmates bully her without restraint. Apart from her homeroom teacher Akiko, even the teachers share the children's view of her. One boy, Kenta, regards her with curiosity instead of hostility.
