Three friends walk into a brand new high school together to build a soccer team from nothing. That's the whole promise, and the show spends 58 episodes proving why that matters. The animation is dated, the plot hits familiar beats, but the actual texture of friendship, the arguments that don't break you apart, the wins that feel earned because you watched them practice, makes this feel like watching people you know chase something real. Slam Dunk gets the hype. This one builds something quieter and just as solid.
Toshihiko Tanaka, Kenji Shiraishi and Kazuhiro Hiramatsu became best friends playing soccer in junior high, where they were known as the Kakenishi golden trio. They enroll at Kakegawa High, a school founded only a year earlier, because they idolize its star player, Yoshiharu Kubo. Kubo carried a team of first-years to the best eight in the prefecture almost by himself, and he turned down offers from foreign pro clubs to lead the school toward the All-Japan High School Championship. Toshihiko's hopes fade quickly. Kubo is out sick, freshmen are barred from practicing with the sophomores or becoming regulars, and Kenji and Kazuhiro have given up soccer for personal reasons. Then Kazumi Endo, a girl Toshihiko knew as a child, decides to get the trio back together in her own mischievous way. The sports drama mixes action, comedy and romance as the friends face hardships and losses on the road to becoming a legendary high school team.
