Morning breaks over a major border checkpoint in the Hakone mountains, where groups of traveling entertainers arrive from Mishima and Odawara. When a declaration rings out that nobody may cross without a pass, the performers without steady work shrink back, since none of them carries one. Then a kindly official steps forward with an offer: anyone who can show off their entertainment will be allowed through. The film centers on those wandering artists and their chance at the crossing.
