Guts and Griffith's bond forms the entire emotional weight of this film, and watching it means knowing exactly how it shatters. The 3D animation is rough enough to distract, and the pacing rushes through years of relationship-building that deserved to breathe. What remains is still devastating: two men who needed each other in ways neither could admit, trapped in a story that was always going to end in blood. The Band of the Hawk becomes your family first. Then it becomes a graveyard.

Guts roams the Kingdom of Midland as a mercenary with no real direction, going from one fight to the next with a sword bigger than he is. When he faces Griffith, the magnetic leader of the Band of the Hawk, everything shifts. Beaten in a duel he expected to win, Guts is made to join the mercenary company. Within the Band, a bond grows between Guts and Griffith as they fight side by side for Midland against the Empire of Chuder. Casca, a hardened swordswoman in the Band, has trouble accepting Guts and the effect he has on the people around her. Meanwhile, Griffith keeps rising in power, apparently in pursuit of mysterious goals tied to a prophecy, and he seems to want far more than victory in the war. This dark fantasy film mixes action, drama and horror.
