The first of two films, this entry retells the TV series in condensed form. Mirai Kuriyama is the last surviving member of a clan of Spirit World warriors who fight using their own blood as weapons, and her duty is to hunt youmu, creatures believed to arise from negative human emotions. On the school roof she meets Akihito Kanbara, a rare half-youmu in human form, and in a panic drives her blood saber into him, only to find he cannot die. An odd friendship follows, built around her repeated attempts to kill him as a way of shoring up her shaky confidence as a warrior. Akihito talks her into joining the Literary Club, home to two other strong Spirit World warriors, Hiroomi and Mitsuki Nase. As the group grows closer, the youmu around them grow more aggressive, and their scrapes turn into a struggle to survive as the release of the mightiest youmu, Beyond the Boundary, draws near.
