Manji stops counting bodies long enough to realize he's been alive so long he forgot why death matters. When Rin enters his world, the show pivots, suddenly his immortality isn't a curse to solve through arithmetic, it's a weight he carries by choosing to stay alive for someone else. The violence never gets prettier, but somewhere between all the blood, it becomes about whether a killer can be worth saving, and whether he's worth saving himself.

Manji is a swordsman in feudal Japan who has been cursed with eternal life, and he has grown weary of all the death he has caused. He strikes a bargain with the witch who made him immortal: he will kill a thousand evil men to make up for the good ones he has slain, and in return she will lift the curse. His quest becomes more complicated when he meets Rin, a young girl seeking revenge on the sword school whose members killed her family. Together they become targets for a long line of enemies who attack them almost constantly. Rin's quest for justice and Manji's pursuit of mortality intertwine as they move from one bloody fight to the next. Both must keep from being consumed by revenge, and each hopes to find some kind of peace at the end of the road.
