In early 20th century Japan, Tanjiro supports his family by selling charcoal after his father's death, living a poor but happy life on a remote mountain. Returning home after a night away, he finds his family slaughtered by a demon. The only survivor is his sister Nezuko, who has been turned into a bloodthirsty demon herself, yet still shows signs of human thought and feeling. Rather than abandon her, Tanjiro vows to become a demon slayer, find a way to make his sister human again, and kill the demon that murdered his family. His path brings him alongside the Demon Slayer Corps as he fights demons and guards what remains of Nezuko's humanity.
