A bombing at a TV station traps two people Conan actually cares about, and for once the mystery takes a backseat to whether he can get them out alive. The Ogura Hyakunin Isshu tournament becomes the frame, but the real case is the clock ticking down inside a burning building. Conan works the problem like always, except this time solving it doesn't feel like the point anymore.

A bombing tears through Nichiuri TV during filming of the Satsuki Cup, a national competitive karuta tournament, trapping Heiji and Kazuha inside the burning building. Conan arrives just in time to pull them to safety, but questions linger: who planted the bomb and why? Amid the confusion, a mysterious girl appears claiming to be Heiji's fiancée. Her name is Momiji Ooka, the Kyoto high school karuta champion. By coincidence, Kazuha is set to face Momiji in the Hyakunin Isshu competition, so she starts training under Heiji's mother, Shizuka, a skilled player herself. Meanwhile, the reigning Satsuki Cup champion is found murdered at a Japanese house in Arashiyama, with karuta cards scattered around the body and crime scene photos placing Momiji there. Conan and Heiji join the Osaka and Kyoto police to investigate the tournament and the killing, uncovering a secret tied to the Hyakunin Isshu along the way. The film blends mystery, adventure and comedy.
