Souji is the same person streaming slurs for rent money and carrying his sister to the hospital at 3 AM. The show doesn't let you split the difference between those two truths. You watch someone you despise become someone you understand, and by episode three you realize the real horror isn't what he does online, it's why he has to keep doing it.

Souji needs money, and fast. His sister's medical bills won't pay themselves, so the high school dropout streams as Aoringo, a troll who posts deliberately offensive flamebait and profits from the viewers who tune in to hate him. The hate comments pile up and the revenue rolls in, and Souji doesn't mind being despised by everyone as long as his little sister gets better. Nobody watching sees the caring older brother with a sweet tooth behind the persona. Then something very strange begins to happen, pulling him into a supernatural action story.
