DEDARI is an animated film Hirotoshi Iwasaki made as his graduation project. It draws on footage of ceremonies shot while doing field research in Bali, Indonesia. At its center is Sangyan Dudari, one of the hundreds of Balinese ceremonies called Sangyan, which is said to be the most powerful for driving out evil. In the rite, two girls who have not yet started menstruating are possessed by Dudari, spirits of heavenly maidens, and keep dancing without pause.
