A man moves his family to an island to study bears, not to save them or prove something. The poachers come anyway, and he ends up raising an orphaned cub because that's what you do when something needs you. This is a quiet film about people who choose to live alongside wildness instead of conquering it, and it lets that choice matter more than any plot twist ever could.

Mutsugoro, a researcher, brings his family to a remote, uninhabited island close to Hokkaido so he can study the wild bears that live there. Poachers operating nearby cause him trouble during his work. When an orphaned bear cub ends up in his care, the family names the little bear Donbe and brings him up as though he were one of them. The story is told in a single special from 1981.
