Tohru finally has to choose between saving everyone else and admitting what she actually wants, and the show lets that contradiction destroy her for a full season. Every Soma breaks their curse in real time, which means watching them grieve the thing that defined their entire existence. The finale doesn't solve the romance, it solves something harder, something that matters more than happy endings: it lets these people stop apologizing for being alive.

The Soma family curse still binds them, but the cracks are starting to show. Tohru knows the truth now, yet she cannot bring herself to say why she wants the curse lifted. Time feels precious and dangerous all at once, with someone close to her running short on it. Meanwhile, a hidden secret threatens to wound another member of the family. A breakthrough arrives when a clue about the curse finally surfaces, raising the hope that the Somas' long captivity may be nearing its end. Head of the clan Akito clings to his belief in a special bond with the others, who live in fear of his punishment, while Tohru, backed by her friends and her ties to the family, struggles to find the strength to keep going.
