In Kikyougahara, a cone-shaped stretch of land in Shin Province, lives Hana, a kind girl who is devoted to her family and above all to her great-grandmother Chiyo, whom she lovingly calls Granny. When the Natsugawa Genzaemon Troupe, a band of traveling entertainers, comes through, the villagers give them a warm welcome. After a well-received show, the troupe's leader catches sight of Hana holding oyaki, his favorite food, and gets so excited that he turns into a fox. Hana learns that the leader, Genbanojou, and his companions O-Natsu and Shinzaemon are all foxes in human shape. Genbanojou quickly strikes a deal with her: if she keeps their secret, he will grant her a single wish. Hana asks that her Granny be able to see the cherry blossoms.
