Nobody talks about this one. It takes the Tachikomas, already beloved comic relief in a heavy sci-fi series, and gives their rejected predecessors a full musical number about their own obsolescence. The Uchikomas sing about being the wrong model, the backup plan, the thing that didn't work out. In five minutes, it does what Ghost in the Shell does best: finds the humanity in artificial things that aren't supposed to have any.

This five-minute comedy special tells how the Uchikomas came to be. They are second-generation think-tanks, built as replacements for the Tachikomas and regarded as the ugly ducklings of the line because they fell short of the originals. The short also features a musical number by the A.I. Tough Guy Uchikomas, an up-and-coming act booked to entertain at the New Year's Eve party of Harima City for Academic Research. Blending mecha, science fiction and light humor, the special was released as a bonus feature on the Solid State Society DVD.
