Early in November 1927, just before the Huangma Uprising breaks out, five young members of the local self-defense forces are formed into a temporary scouting unit. Setting out from Qiliping in Huang'an, the center of the revolt, they infiltrate the county seat and help the uprising's strike team seize it, then prove themselves in the fighting to defend the county. Badly outmatched, the rebels give up Huang'an after roughly two weeks, and the unit withdraws with the main body to Mulan Mountain in Huangpi County to wage a guerrilla campaign. In January 1928 the rebel forces there are reorganized into the Seventh Army. Across 13 short episodes, the drama stays with these young soldiers as the hardships of war shape them into seasoned revolutionaries.
