Takumi's already won the mountain. Now the movie asks what winning actually cost him. The races stop being about ego the moment he realizes losing means something worse than humiliation. That's the moment Initial D stops being about drift technique and becomes about whether this kid even wants to be a racer anymore.

Takumi's name carries weight now. After watching Takumi's AE86 race Keisuke Takahashi's RX7, Takeshi Nakazato of the Myogi NightKids issues a challenge for a downhill battle on Akina. Nakazato drives a Skyline GT-R that far outclasses the AE86, yet being told he can never beat Takumi infuriates him. Convinced that grip driving beats flashy drifting, he is set on defeating the AE86 to prove himself the better racer. Itsuki accepts the match on Takumi's behalf, but Takumi refuses at first, insisting he is no racer. His employer pushes him to take it on, yet when Takumi goes home for the AE86, his father has already driven off in it. While he waits, the urge to race keeps growing. As Takumi questions who he is as a racer, he comes to see that more than a single race is at stake behind the wheel.
