Sousuke's using the monsters' own power against them now, except it's eating him alive from the inside. Season 2 abandons the self-contained monster-of-the-week horror that made the first season click, pivots hard into mythology and organizational conspiracy instead, and that shift kills it for people who came for the dread. What remains is rawer and stranger, built on grotesque animation and genuine paranoia about losing yourself to the thing you're trying to kill, but it's a completely different show wearing the same name.

Sousuke Banba emerges from the attack on Sarugaku headquarters alive, now carrying something far more dangerous than his research: the ability to draw on the power of the monsters he hunts. These hybrid creatures, the Kagewani, remain the focus of his investigation. With this new power comes a way to destroy them, but also a curse. Using it strains his sanity and threatens to consume his body. As Sousuke pushes deeper into the mystery of the Kagewani's origins, old and new threats close in. The upper ranks of Sarugaku stir into action again, and an assassin with a personal grudge targets him. Still, he presses on, set on tracing where the creatures came from and ending their threat for good. The result is a short-format horror mystery with a supernatural edge.
