A man who cleans up dead monsters gets swallowed by one and survives as the thing itself. Now he has to pass a military exam while keeping the secret that would get him executed. The entire premise is built on watching someone operate at maximum tension, and the show never wastes a frame pretending the stakes are smaller than they actually are. The character work is precise enough that you believe Kafka's desperation to prove himself to Mina, believe Reno's loyalty despite the danger, believe every person in that exam room has earned their place. This is a compilation, which means cuts, but what remains is the skeleton of why the series matters: a guy finding worth in something that should have destroyed him.

Japan is overrun with kaiju, and Kafka Hibino earns his living in monster disposal, far from the ambition he once had. A reunion with his childhood friend Mina Ashiro, now a rising star in the anti-Kaiju Defense Force, pushes him to take up his abandoned dream of joining the Force. Then he suddenly turns into a powerful kaiju known as Kaiju No. 8. Helped by his junior colleague Reno Ichikawa, Kafka keeps his identity secret while working toward passing the Defense Force exam and standing beside Mina. When a mysterious intelligent kaiju attacks a Defense Force base, he faces a crucial decision in a desperate moment. This action sci-fi film compiles the first season along with the special episode "Hoshina's Day Off".
