A locked room mystery that actually uses its gothic setup instead of treating it like window dressing. Kindaichi walks into a hotel where the supernatural threat feels real to the people trapped inside, even if logic says it isn't, and that tension between what might be true and what can be proven becomes the actual case. The vampire is a red herring wrapped inside a murder, and watching him untangle which is which without letting the atmosphere collapse is what makes these specials work.
Kindaichi and his friends set out for a hot spring but lose their way and end up at a shabby, ominous hotel. They hear that a vampire is said to have lived there long ago and that someone once died with bite marks on the neck. Six years earlier, a girl was discovered in the cellar bearing such marks, and the villagers killed her. When a guest is murdered and Miyuki is assaulted by a fanged figure, the old vampire legend seems alive again. In a separate case, Kindaichi, Miyuki and Kenmochi go back to the Opera House Hotel island after the death of its owner, Kurosawa. An old friend who has bought the property invites them along with Kurosawa's former theatre troupe for one last staging of The Phantom of the Opera before the building is demolished, but killings begin before the show can go on.
