Doremi stumbles into magic the way real kids stumble into growing up, messy, unprepared, arguing with her friends one day and saving someone the next. The show doesn't pretend that becoming a witch makes you special or fixes your life. Instead it spends 51 episodes showing you how a third grader learns that magic is just another word for showing up for people, even when you're tired and frustrated and scared. By the end you've watched Doremi become someone you'd actually want to know.

Doremi Harukaze, a third grader at Misora Elementary School, is convinced she is the unluckiest girl in the world. Fascinated by witchcraft, she wanders into a strange shop, meets Majo Rika there, and works out that the woman is a real witch. Being found out by a human turns a witch into a magical frog, so Rika can only get her body back by training Doremi to become a witch herself. Doremi happily signs on as an apprentice, but her best friends Hazuki Fujiwara and Aiko Senoo soon learn her secret. Worried that Doremi could end up a frog as well, Rika takes both girls on as apprentices too. Together the three study magic and work toward passing the witch exams, though Doremi proves just as clumsy at spellcasting as at everything else. The show is a mahou shoujo comedy with drama and slice of life moments.
