The racing is tighter now, the competition sharper, the stakes written in tire marks instead of dialogue. This is what Initial D fans actually wanted the whole time, and Season 2 knows it.

Kanata, the British racing school graduate who came back to Japan to compete in MFG, lines up for the tournament's second race at Lake Ashinoko, a course known for being brutally hard. His Toyota 86 GT gives up a lot of horsepower to the field, yet careful tuning lets him climb into a qualifying spot quickly. On the last day, heavy rain robs every car of grip and leaves the whole field struggling. Drawing on his upbringing and years of training, Kanata moves past much of the pack with daring, risky driving. Two rivals still sit ahead of him: Michael Beckenbauer, who won the previous round, and Kouki Sawatari, who holds the course record. Behind him, other drivers wait for a single slip they can exploit.
