It takes the most overpowered guy in Chinese myth and makes you watch him do gig work. Yang Jian, third eye sealed, wandering the floating islands of Penglai on a beat-up sky skiff with his dog Xiaotian, taking bounties for spare change because the Heavenly Court that used him has rotted from the inside. Then the mark turns out to be Shen Xiang, his own nephew, chasing the Lotus Lamp to split the mountain his mother is buried under, and the movie stops being a fantasy chase and starts being about what an uncle did fifteen hundred years ago and cannot take back. Light Chaser flexes hard here, ink-wash cliffs against brass-and-rust airships, but the reason the third eye finally opening lands is guilt, not spectacle. It is a wuxia road movie about a man who obeyed an order and has been paying interest on it ever since. Uncles who did the right thing and lost everything anyway: this one's for you.

Fifteen centuries after the Battle of the Gods, the Heavenly Court is waning, and Yang Jian, a formerly powerful god who suffered an injustice, survives on meager pay as a bounty hunter. A mysterious woman gives him a job hunting a young man, and Yang Jian learns by chance that his quarry is Shen Xiang, his long-lost nephew. Years before, Yang Jian locked his own sister away beneath a mountain. Now her son seeks the magical Lotus Lamp so he can break that mountain open and rescue her, even though it will bring about a terrible catastrophe. Yang Jian goes after him to stop him and must confront what he did in the past, while dangerous vigilantes chase the same treasure, one whose power could upset the balance of their worlds.
