This is a cosmological fever dream disguised as a single OVA episode. Six deities birth themselves from nothing, evolving through water and air and stone, each one a different godai element speaking its own language to existence. You watch the world assemble itself from pure concept, and by the end you're not sure if you've witnessed creation myth or hallucination or both at once.

Six deities arrive from outer space, and in them life begins its long passage to Earth. Each rules one of the six elements of godai philosophy: earth, water, fire, wind, sky and consciousness, the last being the awakening named in the title. Across three acts, life takes form in water (Sho-ho), rises into the air (Hyakkin) and finally reaches the ground (Ku-nu), with an intermission act depicting the deities' arrival. Directed by Mamoru Oshii, this fantasy OVA is a musical drama made for a multi-screen theme theater, and it blends CG animation with live-action footage.
