The animation carries episodes the story hasn't earned yet, it's technically gorgeous from frame one, but those first half-dozen episodes feel like tutorial missions. Everything clicks in the final stretch, though. By episode 11, the show figures out it's not about surviving monsters, it's about what you become when survival is the only thing left, and the payoff lands harder than anything set up in the pilot.

By 2071, the Far East lies in the domain of the Aragami, monsters born from unknown life forms called Oracle cells that began devouring all life on Earth in the early 2050s. Conventional weapons cannot harm them, urban civilization has collapsed, and humanity edges closer to extinction every day. Its one hope is the God Arc, a living weapon built from Oracle cells. The organization Fenrir fields an elite force of God Eaters, humans infused with Oracle cells so they can wield these arms. Lenka Utsugi becomes one of them and proves to be a New-Type, whose God Arc shifts between blade and gun. He must master it if he hopes to realize his wish of wiping out the Aragami for good. The action sci-fi TV series adapts the PlayStation Portable action RPG Gods Eater Burst.
