Kafka gets turned into the thing he's spent his life fighting, and the show never blinks at how fundamentally unfair that is. The action stays brutal and grounded, the kind where a single hit from a kaiju crater leaves scars that don't just disappear in the next arc. A cleanup worker gets a second chance at his dream by becoming a monster, and the show builds its entire weight on whether that trade was worth it.

Japan suffers the highest rate of kaiju attacks in the world, and the Japan Defense Force exists to put the monsters down. After their hometown is destroyed, childhood friends Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro promise to join it together. Mina made it and became an officer, but at 32 Kafka has mostly let the dream go and works cleaning up slain kaiju. A new coworker, the ambitious Reno Ichikawa, reminds him of who he used to be. After Kafka saves Reno from a rogue kaiju, another creature attacks him, and he gains the power to turn into a humanoid kaiju. Branded Kaiju No. 8 by the military, he decides to use that strength for good, and he and Reno set out to join the Defense Force.
