Humanity clings to survival aboard Deca-dence, a towering mobile fortress 3000 meters tall, built after mysterious life forms called Gadoll pushed the species to the edge of extinction. Inside, people are divided into Gears, the warriors who battle the Gadoll every day, and Tankers, who mostly work behind the lines. Natsume is a Tanker girl with a prosthetic right arm who wants to fight on the front lines, but her enlistment keeps going unapproved. Instead she takes a cleaning job on an armor repair team run by Kaburagi, a gruff realist who has given up on his own dreams and seems to be hiding more than he shows. Though cold to her at first, he comes to see in her the potential to disrupt the order of their world, and he begins to mentor her.
