The opening five minutes know exactly what you came for: impossibly gorgeous boys discussing the nature of starlight while the camera does something you've never seen before. Nisio Isin's dialogue moves faster than plot, which means you're either laughing at the precision of the wordplay or checking your phone wondering why nothing is happening. The mystery itself doesn't hold together, but it's not supposed to, this is visual storytelling pretending to be a detective story, a Shaft production that treats every frame like it owes you something beautiful just for watching.
A decade-long search for a star she saw only once brings Mayumi Doujima to the headquarters of Yubiwa Academy's Pretty Boy Detective Club, where she meets five boys who are each distinctive in their own way. She has promised her parents that if the star is still missing by her 14th birthday, she will abandon her dream of becoming an astronaut. The eccentric Manabu Soutouin overhears her problem and offers the club's help, under its motto of being pretty, being a boy and being a detective. Mayumi brings a gift of her own: eyesight so sharp she can pick out tiny details, distant figures and concealed traps that others would miss. What begins as a simple star hunt spirals into something far stranger once the search takes a bad turn. Adapted from Nishio Ishin's light novels, the series mixes mystery with comedy and a touch of sci-fi.
