Adapted from the Chinese mythological tale of the warrior deity Nezha, this 1979 animated film tells of a boy who emerges from a lotus flower, able to walk and talk from birth, and becomes the pupil of the immortal Taiyi Zhenren. The Dragon Kings of the Four Seas have given up their peaceful ways and torment the land with violent storms and drought. When the East Sea Dragon King Ao Guang ignores the people's pleas for rain and sends his yaksha Ye Sha to seize children for him to devour, one of Nezha's friends is taken, and Nezha steps in to fight back. The result is a mythological fantasy adventure that pits a young hero against the powerful rulers of the sea. The film screened out of competition at the 1980 Cannes Film Festival.
