This is a show about the moment before history swallows everyone in it. You watch these teenagers argue about philosophy and self-improvement at a normal school in 1913, and you know exactly what's coming for them, but the show refuses to tell you. It stays in the classroom, in the arguments, in the small moments of ambition and friendship that feel infinite when you're nineteen. The weight isn't in what happens next. It's in watching them not know yet.

Changsha, 1913. Under principal Kong Zhaoshou, Hunan No. 1 Normal School has been remade by new-style educational reforms and a staff of respected Chinese and foreign teachers, among them Yang Changji. Nineteen-year-old Mao Zedong wins admission at the top of the entrance exam. Through their studies he grows close to Cai Hesen, Xiao Zisheng and other ambitious young men. Students from Zhounan Women's Normal School, including Tao Siyong, Xiang Jingyu and Yang Kaihui, join them through shared interests. A reading club becomes the place where the group learns together and debates ideas. Political turmoil soon breaks into campus life. When the warlord Tang Xiangming drives Principal Kong out and Mao narrowly escapes arrest, Mao begins to doubt whether education and reform alone can save the country.
